Finding The Best Sunshine Coast Wedding Cakes

Wedding Cake PHoto

At the epicentre of your wedding reception, the cake table shines in all it’s glory, catching the eyes - and salivating tastebuds - of your guests as they enter your venue. Whether you’re a chocoholic, red velvet or carrot cake kind of couple, whether you like minimalistic or rustic styles, cupcakes or the traditional tiered style, one thing that is pretty much guaranteed is that most of us like cake. And boy do we love a good wedding cake!

There are plenty of options for well-established, creative bakers on the Sunshine Coast. Here’s our shortlist of recommendations to get you started.

Cake Designs photoBased in Coolum Beach, Cake Designs boasts a Pastry Chef with an impressive resume, having previously baked cakes for the rich and famous, like Princess Diana and George Michael, at the infamous Harrods in Knightsbridge, London. Having also worked as the Pastry Chef at a number of five star resorts in Australia, you can rest assured you’ll be in good hands with Cake Designs, who offer everything from traditionally frosted cakes, ombre cakes, naked cakes and even macaroon towers!

Elizabeth's Cakes photoElisabeth has been operating Elisabeth’s Wedding Cakes on the Sunshine Coast for over 27 years. As a lone-baker, Elisabeth works closely with her Clients from the first consultation through to the baking, decorating, delivery and set-up at the venue herself, giving you that extra piece of mind that on your big day. Boasting a portfolio of everything from the classic tiered cakes to croquembouche, cupcake, and special treat towers, Elisabeth is sure to have the know-how and patience to rise to your challenge.

Sweetness Contained photo

With their own boutique bakery in Noosaville, Sweetness Contained services everywhere from the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane offering a vast range of cream-filled showstoppers with their artistic flair on decoration. They can also cater to the gluten free, dairy free and vegan wedding parties, making their vintage-inspired creations a hit at every wedding, regardless of your dietary requirements.

Sugar Dreams Cake ArtistryWith a mouth-watering range of signature flavours to choose from for the cake filling, Sugar Dreams Cake Artistry pride themselves on their creative cakes, baked fresh to order, with 100% quality ingredients. The chocolate mud cake coated in white chocolate ganache sounds devishly tempting, and the rainbow cake with white frosting would offer a fun surprise for the wedding guests upon cutting the cake!

Buttercups Cupcakes photoWith a shop in Cooroy where they conduct their tastings, Buttercups Cupcakes provide beautifully decorated and unique wedding cakes that are made lovingly with unbleached flavours, free range eggs and (mainly) natural colourings. Also catering for gluten free, dairy free and vegan diets upon request, their modern yet rustic and elegantly pretty decorating style is all the trend right now.

Now you’ve got your list of potential suppliers, don’t forget to consider these three hot tips to help narrow the search for your perfect wedding cake:

Choose a size that is relevant to the quantity of guests you have attending. A three-tiered cake feeds between 50 – 100 guests so use that as your starting point, and adjust your chosen size to suit.

Ensure the styling of the cake is in keeping with the styling of your venue. If you have lots of floral centrepieces, consider floral décor on a simple white cake. If you have a lot of gold in the wedding, consider gold ribbons around each tier. Your baker should be able to work with you on the creative design, and don’t be afraid to collaborate; if you want a cake decorated in flowers, you can always engage a florist to make the final touches to the cake.

Taste the cake! Once you’ve shortlisted your suppliers and organised appointments, find out if the baker runs tasting sessions or ask them if you can arrange a little sampling session just for you. There’s absolutely no need to wait til your wedding day to find out that you don’t actually like fondant frosting and should have opted for buttercream!
